King O'Malleys Rocks - Thursday, May 07, 2009

"you guys rock" that was the call from the dance floor for our first venture to King O'Malleys in the City!

Watch this space because we are back for more real soon

New Songs Showcased - Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Whilst the harps away the hats do play.  Or so it seems.

Derek might have been on the road but the time was productive as The Hats move to add some original material.  Swing, country blues and songs about real life now grace the set that we bring to the stage.  These were trialed recently at the Canberra Blues Society with great response from the audience.  Songs about life travelling for work, loved ones being away and the simple life as well as how I like my eggs in the morning are all there!

And as part of the new show Courtney Smith, a favourite with our regular supporters now has new songs for you too!

So come in from the cold, take a seat and have a look around.  You won't be disappointed.

Multicultural Blues - Monday, February 18, 2008

Once again BHB represented the Canberra Blues Society at the Multicultural Festival.

On the big stage with our full horn section and a range of songs the audience got a taste of what they can get each month at the society's jam sessions.

BHB thanks the CBS for once again entrusting us with their on stage promotion at the Multicultural Festival.

My Space

Myspace is the the place where you can hear The Black Hat Band live in action.

We regularly update the songs there so go on over to www.myspace.com/theblackhatband and take a listen.

The tracks over there are taken from a movie camera at one of our live gigs, so the quailty isn't perfect but you can get an idea of how we sound live!

BHB at the Multicultural Festival - Friday, February 23, 2007

What a great buzz it was for BHB to be invited to close out the Multi Cultural Festival on Sunday February 11, 2007 on behalf of the Canberra Blues Society.

What was even better was that the rain held on for the whole of Sunday, yes you read that correctly, in a drought every drop is welcome.  And it didn't dampen our enthusiasm or the crowds enjoyment as they huddled under umbrellas, trees, shop awnings and raincoats to soak up some rock, rhythm and blues!

Well done to all the organisers, we hope to back again next year, with rain included!

David Buckmaster has now got the pro roots and blues jam happening again.  It is on the first Sunday of every month from 2pm to 5pm at Holy Grail in Kingston.

So there are now two strong jams to attend we have decided not to recommence the Black Hat Sessions.

Session No More - Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Unfortunately it is a sign of the times but this venue closed its doors.

So we decided to let the sessions rest over summer and review the need for another jam in early 2009.

Stay posted .............

RENEWED INTEREST IN SOUTHSIDE JAM - Thursday, August 14, 2008

Hi All

Well the reconvened southside jam at The Venue went off without a hitch.  \

There were some new players on hand to enjoy the fun, even guys that hadn't been on stage for 20 years.  Have a look at the photos from the session.

As they said in the add, where the bloody hell are you??

We rolled out some old favourites and played some new numbers.

Don't miss the jam next month, .....

SESSIONS START AGAIN

The Black Hat Sessions will recommence on August 9.

We will be having the same format, same location, same good music and good fun

BUT

We will be having also a new starting time of 4:30pm going through to 7:30pm.  This will allow for those who have to work or have sport commitments to still get along and enjoy the opportunity to perform.

So all you need is your instrument or voice, the desire to perform with similar musos and a couple of hours to spare in a great enviroment.  We do all the rest!

Come along to The Venue, Gartside Circuit, Erindale and enjoy the open mic in the middle of the south side of Canberra!

New Faces New Songs

A great time at the last jam session was had by all.

We had some new players Ben did a set on acoustic guitar with Col Whittaker from the Canberra Blue Society sitting in on harp and a host of others making up a scratch band.

Our hosts got into the act also with the bar manager showing his talent with some well known covers as well as some of his own originals.

Don't miss next month, second Saturday from 2pm to 5pm.  It is intimate, friendlay and best of all free!!

Have a look at the photos from last month!

Sessions Getting Hotter

Session 5 was a blast.

A few new faces, a few new songs and a whole lot of fun.

The sessions just keep getting better and better.  The newest jam on the southside is the place to come and play, everyone gets featured, every standard gets catered for, everyone has fun!

Don't miss March 8th, see you there ........

Session 4 is a Blast - Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Session 4 kicked off the new year with a host of new faces, one all the way from Sydney to blow some harp!!

Tony Renshaw who has been taught by Jim Conway in Sydney and Jon Gindick in America came along and showed us what the Seydel 1847 harp sounds like in the right hands, good one Tony!

And we had a host of others, have a look at the pictures and stay tuned for next months jam ....

Sessions Continue in 2008

The management at The Venue in Erindale are really pleased with the momentum built up in 2007 with the Saturday jams and will continue with another jam on January 12 from 2pm.

A new PA is under development and we will have all go for the new year.  Come along and get into some music .....

First Session Goes off in Style

The first of the Black Hat Sessions took place on Saturday arvo October 13 2007.

It might not have been the biggest crowd to assemble for a jam but those who missed out missed out big time.

We had four bands on the day. Black Hat Band opened the jam with our usual mix of blues, r&b and soul classics.  Chris Harland Band wowed us with some classic blues, Queen Jaunita and the Zydeco Cowboys showcased Canberra's newest zydeco outfit, Kooky Fandango wowed us with some great jazz and soul, now with Courtney Stark singing up front and the day closed out with some great blues with jammers joining the Hats on stage for a great finale.

Don't miss the action next month on the second Saturday of November at 2pm!!

Session Two - Small but Powerful - Sunday, November 11, 2007

Well if you missed session two you need to ask yourself why!!

It might not have been a big turnout but with the day ending with an  all in jam featuring Steve Hartnett on harp, the guitars of David Grey, Lindsay Heffernan and Chris Harland, vocal from Courtney Stark as well as the Black Horns, sax and trumpet, lap steel from Derek Lark and the back line of Jon Nourse and Peter Barta then surely this is what a true jam is all about!!

As well we had offerings from The Black Hat Band, Chris Harland Blues Band and Kooky Fandango throughout the afternoon, a thoroughly entertaining day.

Reserve Dec 8th now!!!

Sessions Set to Go

The Black Hat Band in conjunction with The Venue will host an open mic jam session on the second Saturday of October, November and December 2007.  Boyd Kelly Management is providing it's professional support to this new event.

The second Saturday has been chosen to give musos and their families an alternative to the current jam offerings around town and ensure that you don't have to make a choice between two events!

At the end of these sessions will be looking towards 2008 and refining the jam to suit musicians and their friends wants and needs.

The jam will primarily be blues and roots orientated but there will be no hard rules to follow and we will cater for musicians of all standards and genres.

Musos will get to play in the big room with a full professional PA.  Black Hat Band will be providing drum kit, bass, harmonica and guitar amps so unless you really want to use your own gear just bring along your voice and instruments and enjoy the fun!!

See you on October 13th!
